The Rangers won brilliantly against FCSB and thus strengthened their hopes of progressing in the Europa League.
Philippe Clement has taken some of the pressure off his shoulders as manager of a team that has once again shown there is light at the end of the tunnel.
Ibrox wasn’t completely full but those who came would have been thrilled by what they saw, although Rangers’ victory came at a price.
Philippe Clement gives an update on Rangers’ injury
The injury curse that appears to be haunting those in the hot seat shows no signs of abating any time soon, with four players set to take their places in the waiting area of the Auchenhowie treatment room.
Just as players like Danilo and Ridvan Yilmaz return to full training, there are a few additional names on the dubious list for St Mirren.
Speaking after the 4-0 win over FCSB, Clement was asked in particular about the injury to Cyriel Dessers, but reported on the other wounded running when he said:
“I’m not an eye specialist” after the Rangers’ No.9 appeared visibly upset at having to leave the pitch.
“I have a lot to do at this club, but that’s not part of it. We’ll see how he’s doing in the next few days.
“Tom Lawrence has suffered a bad blow so we’ll have to see how he’s doing and what we can make of it.
“Leon Balogun is tense, so I don’t think it’s a big problem.”
Commenting on Desser’s reaction to the substitution, Clement added:
“He was so emotional. He was hungry to score, hungry to play well for the team.
“He got hit in the eye and lost his sight. He couldn’t see anything anymore or couldn’t see enough to play, so he was emotional in that moment because he didn’t want to get away. But he couldn’t play.
“Afterwards he said: ‘Sorry manager, I should have stayed longer and sat down and given time for the rest’, but it was the emotional reaction of a player who is very hungry to play.”
Jack Butland’s ankle injury is a concern for Rangers
Jack Butland will thank the slow VAR process for not being responsible for Rangers being 1-0 down after just a few minutes.
The England international, capable on both feet, took ages to release the ball and was lucky to receive a very soft free-kick while in possession.
The 31-year-old remained lying down for a while after the challenge and is either a very good actor or he was seriously injured, which was confirmed in the second half when he emerged with his ankle strapped, as discovered by RTV commentary duo Tom Miller and Andy Little .
However, his performance didn’t seem to be affected as he made a few good stops in the second half, but there is still cause for concern.
A goalie with a weak ankle is the last thing Clement needs.
