Exclusive: Liverpool set aside ‘huge’ funds in January

Liverpool are committing “huge” funds to strengthen their squad in January as their title race gathers pace. Sources told Football Insider.

The Merseyside giants will back director of football Richard Hughes and manager Arne Slot to strengthen the team with players who can come straight into the starting XI.

Liverpool have had a remarkable start to the season under their new manager, winning 11 out of 12 games in all competitions. They lead the Premier League after eight games and have a 100 percent record in the reformed Champions League table.

This comes after the Merseysiders made just two senior signings for relatively small sums in the wake of Jurgen Klopp’s emotional departure in the summer.

Federico Chiesa moved from Juventus in a deal worth £12.5m, shortly after they signed Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili for £25m plus £4m in add-ons, although the Georgia international remained with the La Liga club until next summer is.

Liverpool are poised to make mid-season signings following a £37m deal

Liverpool were also close to signing a defensive midfielder, but talks over a deal for Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi collapsed in the 11th minute.

Now the Merseysiders are starting to lay the foundations for next year and that includes both January and the main summer window.

Sources told Football Insider that Slot and the recruiting team have significant resources available to strengthen the positions identified.

Liverpool have shown in recent January windows that they will spend big on the right player. Current stars Virgil van Dijk, Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo all signed mid-season.
